The hashtag #rednailtheory has turned a manicure into a dating experiment, with users sharing everything from compliments to second dates. Here’s what psychologists make of the claims.

Red nails have always been a classic, a go-to for occasions when women want to feel beautiful and stand out. But more recently, the nail color has earned a new reputation, one attached to a social media theory, which says the manicure turns heads and attracts attention, especially from men. Do psychologists agree? Their answer is a qualified yes.

What Is the Red Nail Theory?

The Red Nail Theory first took root in 2022, when TikTok creator Robyn DelMonte shared in a post that men often commented on her red nails. She suspected it was because the color reminded them of their mothers, who commonly wore the shade in the 1990s.

The post prompted thousands of women to test the theory and share the results. Some reported wins like more second dates, confident job interviews, and compliments.

What Does the Research Say?

Psychologist Stefanie Mazer highlights a 2008 article in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. In the study, men rated women in red, whether in red clothing or framed by red backgrounds, as more attractive and sexually desirable, and the response appeared to be subconscious. Scientists called this the "red-attractiveness effect."

A 2024 study of Chinese college students also found that people wearing red were rated as more attractive by the opposite sex than people wearing white.

Red has different connotations for different cultures, according to Mazer. In Western societies, it can be a symbol of romance, while in some parts of Asia, it translates to luck and prosperity. It can also signify danger in other contexts. Evolutionary psychology suggests red may signal dominance, vitality, and fertility in many species, she says.

So, Does It Work?

Experts believe it does, but not as straightforwardly as the theory suggests. Most of the research looked at larger visual cues, such as clothing, so the effect of nail polish was likely subtler. Clinical psychologist Renee Solomon also says people are wired to notice red, which is linked to flushed skin and attraction.

One big factor, says Mazer, is how the color makes the wearer feel. If someone believes the red nails help them stand out, this will also be reflected in the way they present themselves, and people will notice. She says red nails may work "less because of the color itself and more because they boost self-perception." That points to a possible placebo effect.

Real-life stories are personal and don’t prove anything. One woman told Women's Health that a man she was seeing liked her red nails, and that someone complimented them at a party even though the polish wasn't fresh. Mazer shared that a friend felt more put together in red and wasn’t sure whether men noticed her more because of the polish or her confidence.

Picking Your Shade

If you want to test the theory, Elle says there is a red for every mood and skin tone, and that red nails look like a statement, whether short or long. Its editors list classic cherry, sun-warmed coral, moody ruby with shimmer, bright raspberry, and cozy brown-reds. These are one editor's picks, not tested results.

Other nail color "theories" are circulating, too. TikTokers say blue nails signal calm confidence, black nails project "boss energy," and pink nails feel playful.
