You're Moisturizing, So Why Is Your Skin Still Dry? Dermatologists Explain

No matter how much moisturizer you apply, your skin still feels dry and uncomfortable. Dermatologists say the real culprit could be hiding in your everyday routine.

If you’re wondering why your skin is still dry even when you’ve diligently been moisturizing, you’re probably not addressing the how, when, or what when it comes to moisturizing.

What are you using to moisturize your skin?

One common reason why you still have dry skin despite using a moisturizer is the formula you’re using is too light. "A hyaluronic acid gel can attract water, but dry skin often needs lipids to seal it in," dermatologist Jessica Wu, MD, says.

If you have very dry skin, Wu recommends a cream in a jar over a thin lotion, preferably one with a mix of humectants, emollients, and occlusives like petroleum jelly.

If dryness persists, the American Academy of Dermatology also recommends looking for fragrance-free formulas, avoiding alcohol-based or retinoid-heavy products.

When do you moisturize?

Timing matters. Wu suggests applying moisturizer just shortly after cleansing, while the skin is still slightly damp, especially at night, "which is when skin loses more water."

How often do you exfoliate?

Wu warns against overexfoliating, which could aggravate the skin barrier. She suggests keeping it to two to three times a week if the dryness persists.

How do you take your showers?

Dermatologist Michelle Henry, MD, advises against hot showers and recommends shorter, cooler showers, as well as patting the skin dry before moisturizing.

There are also other factors to consider that can contribute to or worsen skin dryness. This includes hormonal changes, dry indoor air, smoking, alcohol, and poor sleep.

Consult a dermatologist if dryness persists. This could also be a sign of an underlying condition like eczema or psoriasis.
