Melissa McCarthy, 56, Shares a Candid Glimpse Into Her Weekend Routine — Video
By Andrii TykhyiMelissa McCarthy's latest weekend update looked like a simple glimpse into her Saturday routine — until she turned the camera back toward herself. The seemingly ordinary moment soon had fans taking a much closer look.
Melissa McCarthy was not exactly spending her Saturday lounging around, and her latest glimpse into her weekend routine quickly gave fans something else to talk about.
The actress, 56, revealed a chore involving something she has long had a special fondness for — before a casual turn of the camera in the video offered an unexpected glimpse that caught followers’ attention.
On October 3, McCarthy shared a humorous video on Instagram with the simple caption, "Everybody's got chores."

A Very Different Kind of Saturday Chore
The post began with McCarthy addressing a question she apparently gets from time to time: What does she actually do on a typical Saturday?
"So sometimes people ask me, like, what do you do on a Saturday? What's a typical day for you? I'm like, I think I do the same thing as everybody else," she said.
That setup made her answer sound as though she was about to reveal an especially ordinary weekend routine. And, in one sense, she was. McCarthy then turned the camera toward the chore occupying her Saturday — drying her wigs with a hair dryer.

After showing viewers exactly what she was doing, she turned the camera back toward herself and summed it up simply: "Wash and dry my wigs."
The mundane task was funny enough on its own, but the clip also gave followers a particularly candid look at McCarthy without makeup. That seemingly unplanned glimpse quickly became the part of the video that caught fans' attention most.

Fans Could Hardly Believe the Difference
The comment section of her video soon filled with reactions from people who said they were surprised by how different McCarthy looked in her natural, makeup-free appearance. One commenter wrote, "WOWWW, u look so different 😍😍 u have lost heaps of weight [sic] 🙌🙌🙌😍😍❤️"
Another fan said, "Omg I didn't recognize you 😳😳you lost so much weight." A third commenter wrote, "I barely recognize you❤️" The reactions continued, with another fan writing, "I didn't recognize you, wow! You have lost a lot of weight 👏 awesome 👌"

But the attention was not solely about McCarthy's appearance changing. Several followers focused specifically on the actress' bare face. One commenter wrote, "That bare face is gorgeous!!! 🥰😍" Another said, "She has the cutest face without makeup, she looks like a teenager. Love her."
A separate fan told McCarthy, "Melissa, you look about 19 with no make up on!! Natural beauty." Others simply embraced the stripped-back look, with one commenter writing, "I love the natural/no makeup look!" And another asked, "Why do you look so young💗💗💗"
The reactions put an unexpected spotlight on a moment that McCarthy herself appeared to treat as completely routine.

She Has Never Been Too Concerned With Looking Perfect
The casual nature of the video also fits with comments McCarthy made years earlier about getting older and becoming more comfortable with herself. In a 2018 interview with TODAY, McCarthy reflected on turning 40 and said, "Being in my 40s is such a great relief. I know myself better than I ever have."
She added, "I don't worry about what the perception is. There's always going to be people that don’t like something you’re doing. As you get older, you can step into that and not be worrying about it."
At the time, McCarthy also made it clear that perfection was not something she was chasing, either personally or as a parent. "I've always said, 'You don't have to be perfect to be exceptional.' I want them to follow their heart," she said.
That attitude makes her latest weekend video feel particularly on-brand: There is no glamorous setup, elaborate styling, or attempt to turn a household chore into something more polished than it is. Instead, there is McCarthy, a hair dryer and a collection of wigs.
Wigs Have Been Part of Her Life for Years
The wigs themselves are hardly a random part of McCarthy's Saturday routine. During a Bullseye with Jesse Thorn interview, McCarthy explained that her fascination with wigs began before she joined The Groundlings, the Los Angeles improv theater where she met her husband, Ben Falcone.
"I am! I have a rrrreal fondness for a wig. It started even before The Groundlings. But The Groundlings really sealed the deal," McCarthy said. She explained that every new wig at the theater felt like a new character waiting to emerge, adding, "every new wig was like a whole new person I'd get to meet."
That enthusiasm eventually turned into a serious collection. When asked how many wigs lived at her house, McCarthy laughed and replied, "A bunch. A lot!" She recalled that she donated about 50 wigs when she left The Groundlings, although she still took roughly 10 home with her.
Falcone, who was part of the conversation, joked that he had essentially staged an intervention. "Yeah, but that was almost — I sort of ran intervention," he said, before explaining that she could always come back and ask for the wigs later.
McCarthy also revealed just how central wigs had become to her acting process. "But then every movie—every single movie starts with the wig," she said. "I go — the second—the second I have a part, I go, and I look for a wig, and it starts the whole process."
Even Her Family Has Joined the Wig Obsession
The wig collection is apparently not limited to McCarthy's professional life. In a separate interview about her work and career, McCarthy talked about Falcone's own sense of humor and revealed that wigs have become part of the family's everyday life.
"Ben, he's so funny. He's so weird and so funny," she said. McCarthy explained that she and Falcone sometimes end up doing bits together while wearing wigs in their kitchen, while their daughters simply walk in and accept the scene as normal. "If we're both in wigs doing a bit in the kitchen, like our girls just walk in and they're like, 'Good morning.' There's a lot of wigs in my house."

She also said her daughters played with wigs when they were younger, describing the experience with the enthusiasm of a parent discovering her children had inherited one of her favorite interests.
"My girls have been in wigs. Like they used to play with wigs," McCarthy said. The actress even compared her excitement to the way a sports-loving father might feel watching his children take up the same passion. "I was like, 'This is, I think this is what, like a Texas dad if his kids like a quarterback or whatever. I'm not sporty.' I literally was like, 'This is why I had children. This is beautiful.'"
From Improv Costumes to a Saturday Hair Dryer
McCarthy's affection for wigs goes back even further than her family life and movie career. In a 2008 TV Guide interview, she revealed that she personally had "like, 100 wigs." When asked why she needed so many, McCarthy explained that they were connected to her work with The Groundlings, where she wore them onstage during improv performances.
She described the collection as mostly intentionally terrible-looking wigs, including bad short perms, mullets and hairstyles resembling those worn by older Midwestern women. The collection may have changed over the years, but the fascination clearly never disappeared.
In fact, McCarthy once recalled losing one of her wigs while filming Tammy — and it was not an inexpensive loss. During the Bullseye interview, she said the wig that disappeared into Wilmington Lake had cost $5,000 to $6,000.
The mishap happened during a safety test run for a jet ski, when McCarthy flipped herself off at about 40 miles per hour. She explained that the wig had been secured with roughly 30 or 40 pins, yet the impact still ripped it away.
"There's a wig—there's a Tammy wig at the bottom of Wilmington lake," she said. So, while washing and drying wigs may sound like an unusually specific Saturday chore to most people, for McCarthy, it is part of a relationship with wigs that has lasted for decades.
And this time, the bigger surprise was not what was sitting on her head. It was the completely natural face she showed viewers when she turned the camera back toward herself.
As we previously reported, this is far from the first time fans have struggled to recognize the actress — just months earlier, a seemingly casual Instagram post sparked an almost identical wave of disbelief.
From casual selfies to red carpet moments, the 54-year-old often sparks a wide range of reactions with her appearances. One of McCarthy's latest Instagram posts was meant to spotlight an inspiring new musical, but it's her appearance that's taken center stage, with fans weighing in on why she looks so different.
